Bagaimana agar pintar dalam pelajaran matematika? Sebuah penelitian mendapati mental aritmetika menjadi lebih mudah diterima oleh orang jika makan, makanan tertentu dalam jumlah besar.

Penelitian mendapati senyawa yang terdapat di coklat dan disebut flavanols sangat membantu dalam melakukan tugas perhitungan matematika. Zat itu juga bisa mengurangi perasaan lelah, serta kekeringaan mental. Demikian penelitian yang dipresentasikan pada pertemuan tahunan Psychological Society Inggris.

Prof David Kennedy dari Northumbria University yang merupakan penulis kedua laporan itu mengatakan, coklat sangat membantu tugas yang berhubungan dengan mental.

Penemuan itu menunjukkan pelajar yang makan coklat, saat menghadapi ujian bisa mendapat nilai tinggi.

Flavanols merupakan bagian senyawa kimia yang disebut polyphenols dan bekerja meningkatkan aliran darah ke otak.

Penelitian itu dilakukan pada 30 sukarelawan yang harus mengerjakan tugas menghitung mundur 3 angka antara 800 hingga 999 yang dihasilkan oleh komputer.

Penemuan itu menunjukkan relawan bisa menghitung lebih cepat dan lebih tepat setelah minum coklat.

Namun hasilnya berbeda saat mengerjakan tugas hitung mundur 7 angka karena lebih rumit dan membutuhkan bagian otak yang berbeda.

Penelitian itu juga mendapati rasa lelah melakukan perhitungan lebih kecil saat diberi minuman coklat, meskipun melakukan secara berulang kali selama berjam-jam.
